Special Needs: Unfortunately, Macy will have to undergo more surgery to remove the orthopedic hardware and, last but not least, she'll have to endure heartworm treatment as well. This tiny baby has been through so much pain and has so much more to go through before she's healthy and whole again.
Description:
No matter how long we do this, we will NEVER understand how a human can be so cruel to such a tiny, trusting creature as a small dachshund that weighs only 5.5 pounds. Sweet little Macy was recently rescued from a Gulf Coast municipal shelter where she was spotted by a family who was so interested in giving Macy a chance to live that they contacted ATDR and set out to help save her. The shelter noted that she was "limping a bit" so the family took her straight to their vet on Padre Island. After careful examination it was determined that poor Macy had some very complicated injuries – a broken pelvis and a femoral fracture and she would need to come to Houston for orthopedic surgery. On top of her broken bones she was also diagnosed to be heartworm positive, yet another confirmation that her life before rescue was not good to her. The family who rescued Macy brought her to Houston the following day and by mid afternoon Macy was in the capable hands of Dr. Jeffries and Dr. Powell in Houston. Their examination showed that both fractures were consistent with being KICKED! Blunt force trauma to that area often results in this type of complex fracture and the injuries will require extensive orthopedic surgery. Poor tiny Macy spent the night at the vet's office and had her spay and orthopedic procedure the following day. She now has pins and wiring that were carefully placed in her leg. The pelvis has already begun healing naturally and the vets are very optimistic that sweet little Macy will eventually come through with flying colors! She is already trying to put weight on her back leg and it will be hard to keep her quiet as she starts feeling better. Please show her that humans can be good as opposed to cruel by contributing what you can to help cover the large vet bills she has incurred. No amount is too small! Thank you!!
