Description: Sarah Lee had only been in her foster home a short time when a previous ATDR adopter spotted her and fell in love. She was recovering from being spayed when her foster parents noticed she was walking like she'd been nipping in the wine bottle. They watched her a couple of hours and then took her in to have the vet check her out. An x-ray showed slight cloudiness around the disk at T-12 and she was sent home to be on medication and crate rest for two weeks. Within a few days her condition deteriorated to the point where she couldn't move her hindquarters at all. Our surgeon discovered the disc at T-11 had ruptured into T-12. If he operated immediately she'd have an 85-95% chance of recovery. So little Sarah went right into surgery and spent a few days under observation at the surgeon's office. Now she's back in her foster home, glad to be back in familiar surroundings and getting lots of TLC. She has 11 staples down her spine and a really bad haircut.
February 14, 2011: Sarah was up early this morning ready for her therapy after breakfast. She still doesn't have any control over her back legs, but she can stiffen them out and balance for a few seconds. She has control over her pottying, but her foster parents are having a bit of a learning curve in her best efforts to communicate that! Her pain seems to be easing a bit, so along with her other exercises, she's doing her own form of Pilates, rolling her body over a ball that helps her toes tickle the ground. The sunshine and warmer grass are welcome friends to this sweet little lady.
